Hi friends! [enthusiastic] Welcome to *It Really Happened!* I’m your host, Bill Whitaker, and today’s true adventure is… *The Town That Moved Overnight!* [curious] Get ready—this story is about an entire town that packed up and left after a huge disaster. But here’s the twist… [playful] they didn’t just leave. They actually MOVED the town! Houses, buildings, and all. [intrigued] How do you even DO that?! Let’s dive in and find out.
[curious] Okay, picture this. [reflective] It’s 1963, and there’s a tiny town in Alaska called Portage. It’s nestled right by the water, surrounded by snowy mountains. Only about 50 people live there. [warm] Mostly families. It’s quiet, peaceful, and—get this—it’s so close to nature, you could fish right outside your front door if you wanted to.
[serious] But then, in March of 1964, something terrifying happens. A giant earthquake strikes Alaska. [dramatic] Not just any earthquake—this is one of the biggest earthquakes EVER recorded in history. [surprised] It’s so strong that people feel it hundreds of miles away.
[dramatic] The ground shakes like crazy for more than four minutes. Imagine how LONG that must feel. [intense] Tables topple, walls crack, and the earth itself starts moving. It’s not just an earthquake—it’s like the land is *rippling*! And when it finally stops… [pause] it’s clear that Portage has changed forever.
[serious] Here’s what happened. The land underneath the town—yes, the actual ground—sank more than six feet. [curious] SIX. FEET. That doesn’t sound like much, right? [thoughtful] But for a town right near the ocean, it’s a huge problem. [dramatic] Suddenly, when the ocean water comes in with the tide, parts of Portage are underwater. [slowly] Houses? Flooded. Roads? Disappeared. [serious] The land is swampy and salty now. People’s homes… and lives… are ruined.
[thoughtful] The people of Portage realize they have to leave. The land just isn’t safe anymore. [curious] Some of you might be thinking, “Why not just rebuild somewhere else?” That would be simpler, right? [warmly] But here’s the thing—this is their HOME. They made memories here. [softly] They’ve got decades of history in every brick and board. They don’t want to just leave it all behind.
[excited] So they come up with a wild idea. What if they actually take the buildings with them?! [surprised] I know what you’re thinking. How do you even MOVE a whole town? It sounds impossible, right? [confident] But guess what? They figured out a way!
[curious] Here’s how they did it. [thoughtful] First, they pick a new spot to rebuild. It’s another town nearby called Whittier. [slowly] It’s close enough that it makes sense, but far enough that the land there isn’t sinking. [narrating] Then, the hard work begins.
[enthusiastic] They lift the buildings off their foundations—yes, the WHOLE building—and carefully load them onto giant flatbed trucks. [in awe] Imagine seeing a house rolling down the road like a parade float! [playful] It must’ve been SO strange to watch. [confident] But it worked! They moved houses, stores, and even a church this way.
[curious] Did you know this isn’t the first time a whole town has moved? [storytelling] Back in the 1800s, entire buildings were rolled on logs or carried by horse-drawn carts. But in Portage, they used modern machines to make it happen faster. [urgently] It was a race against time, too, because they didn’t want the tides to ruin more of the town before they could save it.
[thoughtful] Piece by piece, the new Portage came to life in Whittier. Families settled into their newly transported homes, shops reopened, and life got back to normal. [softly] Well, as normal as it could be after such a big adventure! [warmly] Moving wasn’t easy—it took a lot of teamwork, creativity, and hard work. [confident] But they did it. Together.
[reflective] And today, the old town of Portage? It’s almost completely gone. [thoughtful] The few buildings that were left behind are now ghostly ruins, half-submerged in water. [dramatic] If you ever visit, you can still see them rising out of the marsh… like the town is trying to remind people of what happened.
[warmly] But the spirit of Portage didn’t disappear. [confident] It lives on in Whittier. [thoughtful] The people saved their town by moving it to a new home. [excited] They didn’t give up, even when things seemed impossible. And that’s what makes this story so cool.
[enthusiastic] And that… really happened! [friendly] A town moved itself to safety after an earthquake tried to sink it. [playful] Now you know how they did it! Thanks for listening, friends. If something surprising happened to YOU, tell a friend about it! And I’ll see you next time for another wild, surprising story on *It Really Happened!*
